Digital audio and data communications are becoming more important in modern telecommunications networks. As digital networks replace older analog networks, users and service providers demand more bandwidth in their digital communications systems. Fiber optic communications provide a bandwidth not possible with copper wire connections. But, fiber optic communications are still relatively costly to implement and maintain. It would be advantageous to provide digital communications systems that are both easy to install and use and have a lower cost of deployment. The present invention is directed to a transmitter and a receiver for communicating digital data. A first transmitter includes a plurality of first lasers, which provide a plurality of laser beams. A first optical modulator receives a digital data signal and a first control signal, and receives at least some of the plurality of laser beams. A first optical coupler combines the plurality of laser beams into a single laser beam that is output. A first laser driver provides at least some of the plurality of laser beams to the first optical modulator. A second transmitter includes a plurality of second lasers, which provide a plurality of laser beams. A second optical modulator receives a digital data signal and a second control signal, and receives at least some of the plurality of laser beams. A second optical coupler combines the plurality of laser beams into a single laser beam that is output. A second laser driver provides at least some of the plurality of laser beams to the second optical modulator. A receiver includes an optical combiner that receives the single laser beam output by a first transmitter, and combines the single laser beam with a plurality of laser beams from a second transmitter. A first optical detector receives at least some of the plurality of laser beams and receives the single laser beam output by the optical combiner. A second optical detector receives at least some of the plurality of laser beams and receives the single laser beam output by the optical combiner.1.
